With a single point of contact, you get access to a network of companies and suppliers. Everyone has their own expertise, together we are responsible for the success of your project. Short lines, decisive and competitive.

GBC stands for unburdening, efficiency, decisiveness and custom-made solutions. In everything we do, technical and commercial interests go hand in hand. The markets we serve, have a requirement that is driven by mass, volume and density. We are specialized in the translation of raw materials into custom made products.

GBC was founded in September 2019, after an educational period within the LKAB group, where owner Bas Sotthewes started his career in the minerals business early 2007. In his role as Technical Sales, he has supplied raw materials to numerous ballast projects, serving the naval and energy sector. Hywind Scotland (floating wind spar foundations), Wheatstone Australia (LNG steel gravity structure), Kårehamn Offshore Windfarm Sweden (offshore wind gravity based foundations), BigLift Shipping (heavy lift vessels).

Since then, Bas knows how to combine technical background and interest with commercial skills in a sublime way. At GBC you benefit from experience in the technical application of raw materials.

Embarking on the journey from your individual needs, navigating through the realm of practical feasibility, and arriving at a seamless and successful implementation necessitates a rigorously structured approach. To us, each project is a singular entity, defying the notion of a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach or ready-made solutions. It is what we call your project design and consist of the following steps.

1. Theoretical Design
2. Laboratory Testing
3. Scale Model Test
4. Full Scale Test
5. Implementation

1. Theoretical Design

Based on your needs (mass, volume and structure design) we can determine density and workability requirements for the ballast products. The first step is to create a theoretical design of your product. Basic raw materials are aggregates, fillers, auxiliary materials and water. We determine most practical available raw materials, ideally from local sources, utilizing a worldwide network of raw material suppliers. Based on experience, we prepare a mixture that is expected to fulfill your needs.

2. Laboratory Testing

The theoretical composition is put into practice and tested against the applicable standards with regard to density, workability and stability. To date, it has not yet happened that the theoretical design meets expectations in practice at once, thus laboratory tests are a crucial part of our activities. The start of a process of patience, best available experiences, adjusting and adapting and testing again. We will develop a custom made ballast product that meets the your expectations and the market standards.

3. Scale Model Test

A scale model test gives a good indication of workability and stability. More important, it comes closest to reality and gives you an insight of what you can expect. How does the material flow, how will the material spread in your structure and what can be the expected fill rate. Managing expectations!

4. Full Scale Test

A full-scale test embodies complete implementation insights. It reveals product density, workability, and stability, facilitating precision adjustments and fill rate determination. This convergence of theory and practice marks an irreversible progression, obviating the need to backtrack. Equipment selection and installation speed are integral part of our procedures.

5. Implementation

The final step in the project chain is implementation, we are ready to install your custom made product. Raw materials and equipment are purchased and arrive on your project site. Depending on your needs, we operate 24/7. We can install on land, at quay side, in dry docks, on open water, in ports, under water, it’s your call.
